Breaking News: Election Commissioner Arun Goel Resigns Ahead of LS Polls

Arun Goel, one of the three election commissioner has tendered his resignation, just days before announcement of Lok Sabha election dates. The reason for his decision is not yet known.

His tenure was till 2027 and the President has accepted his resignation, said sources. A gazette notification issued on Saturday announced the acceptance of the resignation submitted by Shri Arun Goel, Election Commissioner, effective from March 9, 2024.

The decision aligns with Clause (1) of Section 11 of The Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Act, 2023. Sources indicate that Arun Goel, having resigned, was a potential candidate for the position of Chief Election Commissioner. This speculation arises as the current CEC, Rajiv Kumar, is scheduled to retire in February 2025.
